Drummer archaeologist. I know, weird combination.
Tool Invincible - Johnkew Drum Cover
After listening to the new album, Invincible was immediately a standout song. And it was probably the favorite song I heard them play live on the tour. Danny's songs are always such a pleasure to learn, and to play. The constant experimenting with 3 over 7 in this song is outstanding, and the way DC orchestrates it throughout the song proves once again that he is a true master of the art, and that he continues to improve.
I'm very excited to be recording again, this time in a new home studio. I'm loving way the drums are sounding with this new setup, and I'm looking forward to recording more songs. As always, thanks for watching and for your feedback. I can't believe it has been almost a decade since I uploaded my first drum video to this channel. And many of you have been watching and commenting since nearly the beginning, so thank you!

Hum - Stars - Drum Recording
Переглядів 17 тис.5 років тому
This is the studio recording of the cover song we (Portraits) did of 'Stars' by Hum. The music video was released two weeks ago, but I wanted to put this up if anyone is interested in the full drum video. I hope you enjoy, and thanks for watching! Mixed and mastered by Hurt Studios and Tim Morris. Special thanks to Benn Down for vocals and guitar.
Portraits - Stars (Hum)
Переглядів 14 тис.5 років тому
After already working with Ben for a couple of years, we were having a conversation one day about bands we love, and came to the realization that Hum was majorly influential for both of us. I had watched them play some local circuits and small clubs back in the 90s and was immediately hooked. So we planned then to cover one of their songs, and now it has (finally) materialized. I hope we captur...

Z.1 Deadhead - Studio Drum Recording
Переглядів 12 тис.6 років тому
This is the original recording studio session for the song Deadhead on the album Z.1, which was released by Hurt Records on August 21, 2017. Of all the songs on the album, this one was the most challenging in terms of raw speed. I actually wore a hole in my shoes! I haven't had much of a chance to promote this album, as I've been busy at work since it was released. But I absolutely love how it ...
Tool - Rosetta Stoned // Johnkew Drum Cover
Переглядів 742 тис.7 років тому
What can you say about Rosetta Stoned? A contender for Tool's best song, for sure. And it's definitely one of their most technically complex and difficult songs. People have been asking me to record this one for years now. But it has taken until now to do it because (1) it's 11-minutes of polyrhythms and I'm lazy, and (2), I wanted to do it justice. I can safely say that this was the most diffi...
Mastodon - Andromeda // Johnkew Drum Cover

One listen to Mastodon's new single and I knew I wanted to try it on the drums. It's always a workout playing along with Brann. And it's always a lot faster than I think going into it. Only one broken stick, but lots of wood chips. Anybody need some hickory mulch? I proudly endorse Murat Diril handmade Turkish cymbals. Islander - Casket // Johnkew Drum Cover
Переглядів 13 тис.7 років тому
I’m really loving this new album from Islander. Arin Illjey (previously in Avenged Sevenfold) really lays down some sick drums throughout the album, and this song really stood out to me as one of the best. So I thought this would be a good song to introduce my new cymbal setup! Murat Diril graciously offered to take me into their endorser family, and I’m SO stoked on these hand-hammered gems fr...
Mastodon - The Motherload // Johnkew Drum Cover

This one is long overdue. Last year I played along to this song to get my chops back after a drumming hiatus, and I planned on recording it then. More than a year later, and I was telling a friend how hilarious the music video for this song is, and I remembered how great of a song this is. How Brann can sing and drum this arrangement is beyond me. Although what is maybe not so apparent is that ...
Eyes on the King (Benn) // Drum Recording Session
Переглядів 9 тис.7 років тому
Here's a tracking session for the song Eyes on the King, by Benn. This is not a Portraits song, but a single that Ben asked me to track drums for as an entirely separate project. I really like how the song came together, and it was a lot of fun tracking these drums for it. This is the 'drum mix', and includes only the instrumental music. The full single is available at Hurt Records: www.hurtrec...

A much mellower vibe than my usual, but I've been absolutely loving this song since it was released. It was haunting my dreams, and I decided to record a improvisational take when I was near my studio the other day and had an hour to spare. I didn't even have all my cameras with me, so you're getting a pretty raw recording here, but hopefully it's enjoyable for its Spartan production, for a cha...

Excellent drumming sir...
Very impressive dude. Looks like you're living just right.
Now let's see if Danny can cover Rosetta Stoned! ;-)
Seeing it maybe 50th time and It's just as cool as the first time I saw it.
incredible... the fact that humans are capable of doing this is completely mind boggling..
eight years later and I still coming back <3 thanks
This is GREAT! Superb job!!!
That is not an easy drum line to perform.
Absolutely magic! You work with the triplets throughout the entire song are absolutely amazing. You both inspire and make me want to quit drumming at the same time! Phenomenal work!
i commented 4 months ago didnt realize you did a good job.
ur fucking awesome man i adore u
Dude, you're incredible! I miss U so much, I really hope that everything is going well. A hug from Chile
If UA-cam would allow viewers to like a video every time they watch it, this video would have had 700k likes already (I would have contributed 1k or more)
That was amazing! Good job, man!
amazingly well done!
Very Good job!
as often as I listen to this-sometimes 3 times a day, you should at LEAST be sending me a christmas card for it? :D
11 years later and still probably the best drum cover of this song.
Where are you from? Would love to jam tool songs with ya
Jesus H. Christ on a stick, you NAILED that cover. And it's Danny frickin Carey. Why did you stop doing drum videos? No way you're THAT good at pickleball. Fuckin hell.
Fantastic man!!!
what a master piece! you should be proud!!!
I just took my drum set and threw it in the trash 🗑️
That? Was a helluvan accomplishment. Only the greats get helluvans. Count yourself as one, because we all do!
Whoa. Pickleball must be a really incredible sport to drag you away from THIS. I'm subbing anyway, just in case you decide to come back to being an epic UA-cam drummer.
Shame you guys never released anything new... I really enjoyed the album
THE SONG UTILIZES THE WHOLE KIT SO WELL
This is fucking absolutely definitely crazy epic drumming, thank you let me listen this amazing details of Danny’s drumming
pure FIRE AWESOME
I’m not a drummer but knowing this song sounds hard to play this guy sends it!
BRO OMG call Danny and let him know he can take some shows off if needed and you fill in cuz U GOT IT!!! DAAAAAMN!!
INSTANT SUBSCRIPTION!!!! Controlled, Articulated, excellent video, superbly played. I would like to thank you for giving me this mornings drive to kick ass!!!

Great sound except for the deepness of the snare throws it off
fucking bravo man seriously
Killed it....
Wear the grudge like a crown 👑
This is a little random but dude you looked like you've been working out hahaha
Great work on this one. Kit sounds great!
The first stick flip 😮💨😮💨😮💨
Holy shit this guy is the goat at tool cover
Goood job
i believe the polios are mostly on the destroy erase improve/chaosphere album, hence i never was capable to play it even remotely because it was more or less encrypted. Isnt this here more like a much more complicated version of a slow groove metal beat, with accent turned into the beat instead of accents on top. I showed meshuggah to my drum teacher in 1996 or 97 i was the first fan in my area, bought the album because i was a pantera fan and i wanted to have another band that played that kind of metal and had proper shoutings. Damn was i wrong about "the same style" i basically influenced meshuggah where ever i went, on every party, in front of any otrher metal head or pupil. But back then you accepted other styles as unique and played your own style instead of trying to immitate it. Groove metal wasnt yet redundant or boring at least not if you played your instrument for 3 years. I would have never imagined that meshuggah will become the status quo for heavy drumming on universities etc. insane. My drum teacher kinda played it down but i believe he just didnt like technicallity too much although being a jazzer. hard to say. the narcizistic teacher in our area who was a lover of noise rock on the other hand took this band from my former pupil and took off. he was that kind of person that would absoilutely dissect it and immitate/teach every bit of it, i was the kind of guy that said "i stop taking lessons and just play because i like the feeling of it rather than to do rudiments for ages" and i went after 3 years with him saying "you are basically good enough for any band" back then it was true, today, cough...
Brilliant!
Opiate² drum cover by @johnkew is a need
Absolutely nailed it. Have watched this about 100 times I reckon. Love ya work!
